Choices. We all make them every day, many inconsequential but others with real potential ramifications, for us and for others.

This weekend, I was reminded of a quote that really resonates with me

“It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities”

Particularly at the current time, the news is full of dramatic stories: the questionable ethical behaviour revealed by the recent phone hacking debacle at News International, the terrible events in Norway and their dignified, inspiring response to it, the untimely death of Amy Winehouse

People are complex, organisations even more so. But every choice that we can have can have consequences…personally and professionally.

For me, that’s food for thought for the week ahead.

And the quote? Harry Potter: The Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling – some of the most insightful comments are made in children’s books, in my humble opinion 🙂

This is brilliant 🙂 My thought for the week ahead too: funnily enough I’ve been thinking along those lines for a few days. You put it so well.

Lovely picture.

Thanks so much for commenting Kate, glad you liked the post

Nice one Alison. I “covered” the phone hacking piece in a song but don’t panic, I’m not going to sing for you now! Nor will I quote any lyrics. And I like your choice of dignified in relation to the tragedy unfolding in Norway.

I sometimes worry about the choices that situations like these may encourage us and those around us to make. Will parliament choose to use the phone hacking thing to bring legislation to muzzle the press? I hope that Norway chooses to remain an open encouraging place even though people are hurting right now, it would be easy to choose to be less open. The US and we here in Blighty are great at allowing politicians to use fear as a weapon, I don’t think the same will happen there, I hope not.

Even though these events are difficult, and rightly cause us to stop and think, I believe we should go on, with more awareness, more dignity for sure.

After all “Adventure is out there.” and going to look for it is just too essential…guess who watched Up this weekend?

You know you can post a link to your singing anytime – its always fab.

You make some really good points about some of the knee jerk reactions we can sometimes have, either personally, or thrust upon us in the name of fear/increasing our security. Being clear on the motive and rationale for our choices is probably also really important.

And I love the film Up – fabulous choice 😉

Cracking post. And I recognised the quote. Hurrah.

Thank you…good to know there are other great literary minds out there…we are officially on the same wavelength 😉

Another great posting Alison. Always refreshing to read yet deeply impactful. Love the quote too. It’s one I have personally used many times with other’s – other’s who ”don’t fit into the system”, but have something quite remarkable to bring into the world. Perhaps the time is nigh!

Thanks Natasha, really appreciate you taking the time to comment. Looking forward to doing the same on your blog soon too 😉
